Make a slip stitch by pulling the first loop on your hook through the second loop (Left). This leaves you with two loops on your hook (Right). With the hook on the inside of the hat, yarn over and pull through to the front (Left). Your hook will now be on the inside of the hat (Right). Next, insert your hook in the next stitch, where the golden needle in the photo above pointed to (Left). You will now have one loop on your hook (Right). Pull the yarn back through the hat to the front (Left). I like to do this with a slip knot for surface crochet (Right). Once the hook is inserted through to the inside of the hat, place the band color yarn on the hook. Insert your hook through the first stitch (Left). You will work the first stitch where the gold needle is on the row, and all the rest you will work out of the part of the stitches where the pink needle is pointing (Right). ![]() To make the band line up a little better, the first stitch will be worked slightly different than the rest in the row. Since the hat is worked in a spiral in continuous rounds, they don’t line up perfectly. Start on the back of your work and find the last stitch at the end of the row. We’ll be working with row 17, in between the FPSC stitches worked over the whole row (Left). Using surface crochet, make a band around witch hat in contrasting color in row 17. Slip stitch in next stitch and finish off. Rnd 22: Sc 4, inc, *sc 8, inc to last remaining 4 stitches, sc4. Rnd 20: Sc 3, inc, *sc 6, inc to last remaining 3 stitches, sc 3.
